If you had a PC that was on a corporate network and had Domain Group Policies applied to it, you may still see:

SOME SETTINGS ARE CONTROLLED BY YOUR ORGANIZATION

This can appear in many places but the most common are Windows Update are Security Settings.  When trying to adding a Microsoft Account, Windows 10 allows you to start the process but then errors out with:

Oops, something went wrong.  Whatever happened it was probably our fault.  Please try again.

Fortunately the fix for SOME SETTINGS ARE CONTROLLED BY YOUR ORGANIZATION and OOPS, SOMETHING WENT WRONG.  WHATEVER HAPPENED IT WAS PROBABLY OUR FAULT is easy to fix:

  1. Click START and type REGEDIT, then press the ENTER key
  2. Expand HKLM\SOFWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\POLICIES
  3. Right click on POLICIES and select DELETE
  4. Ignore the error message telling you that not all items could be deleted
  5. Expand HKLM\SOFWARE\POLICIES\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\POLICIES
  6. Right click on POLICIES and select DELETE
  7. Ignore the error message telling you that not all items could be deleted
  8. Expand HKCU\SOFWARE\POLICIES\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\POLICIES
  9. Right click on POLICIES and select DELETE
  10. Ignore the error message telling you that not all items could be deleted
  11. Reboot your PC

Alternately, you could also pick through the specific policies that might be bothering you, but why not dump them all and solve a pile of future annoyances.

Enjoy!

I followed this but nothing changed…also, I’m quite nervous about having deleted this…wouldn’t I need these in the future? or, wouldn’t it affect some stuff?? Also, I only got to follow the first step, since The other two didn’t have the ‘policies’ folders.

Nope… the policies are optional and most people have no use for them. If you are concerned about it, back up the registry (or just that key) in advance so you can see for yourself.

Don’t you need those though?

I have not been able to access my proxy settings and thus access the internet for ages, and this completely solved my problem. Thanks!
