Does your voice to text not work like it used to? We found that recent updates to our Samsung Galaxy S9 S10 S20 and S20FE‘s are switched to the Samsung voice keyboard.

Typing with your voice used to be easy, accurate, fast and used to learn from its mistakes.

The Samsung voice keyboard is now the default voice keyboard on most Samsung Android cells and tablets and it does work, but is not nearly as well as the Google voice typing keyboard. The Samsung voice keyboard makes mistakes in grammar, misses context and most annoyingly does not learn from previous corrections.  For example we have noticed it gets these words wrong:

  • There, Their and They’re
  • Provenance not Province
  • The word Period rather than a period dot “.”
  • which, witch is winch
  • number 4 is often translated to text as the word “for”
  • and on and on and on

We have the written instructions at the bottom of this article and we recorded two videos on how to solve voice to text problems:

3.5 minute version to be viewed on computer screens:

1 minute version to be viewed on cell phones:

This will appear on YouTube #Shorts searches.

The Google voice to text keyboard is far superior and we show you how to switch to the Google voice keyboard to fix those annoyances and to change it simply:

  1. Swipe down and click the COG ⚙ icon
  2. Scroll down near the bottom of settings and click GENERAL MANAGEMENT
  3. Click LANGUAGE & INPUT
  4. Click ON-SCREEN KEYBOARD
  5. Click MANAGE KEYBOARDS
  6. Set SAMSUNG VOICE INPUT to OFF

[Jump down for the solution for the Galaxy A25]

When will I learn? Just ask the internet! I spent hours on chat with ignorant, inept (or purposely evasive) Samsung support people, and succeeded in only raising my blood pressure. My new Galaxy A25 had this crappy transcriber (as demonstrated above) and I was told flatly that getting the good one like on my old G8 Active (apparently Google Voice Typing) was impossible.

They tried to hide it again, but after reading this I found the correct sequence in a few minutes:

Settings > General Management > Samsung Keyboard Settings > Voice Input > Select the Google Voice Typing radio button, which will deselect the Samsung Voice Input default. Ahhhh! Such a relief. Thanks, Ian, for your good work!

This does not work on the new Samsung S23. Samsung must have read your post and figured how to hide things again and give an absolutely TERRIBLE voice to text. Everything you describe but cannot fix. I had a Samsung S8 and everything worked perfectly. used voice to text every day with little to no problems or mistakes. This S23 is close to going in the garbage. I am sooo disappointed that I bought it.

on my new A15 it is under Settings > General Management > Keyboard List and Default
Change it there and it worked just the way I like it. I can now say “period” or “comma” or “smiley face” and get it.

Change it how exactly? Unclick “Google Voice Typing” I assume. I hate this feature so fricking much and I sure hope this works and appreciate everybody sharing 🙂

This made my day. I’ve been so incredibly frustrated with the poor quality of VTT on my S10e. I finally found your article, made the change in my settings and the heavens opened and light beamed down upon my now fully-functional VTT. Thank you so much!
