Microsofts highly rated free antivirus “Security Essentials” has a new version which is available to the public as a beta as of November 29, 2011 .
From my testing and other reviews it seems the biggest improvement is in performance during scanning; it now uses even fewer resources than version 3. Continued streamlining and simplification of the user interface is also a good thing.
Officially, Microsoft explains the following four items are of note in the new Beta:

• Simplified UI – Simplified UI makes Microsoft Security Essentials Beta easier to use.
• New and improved protection engine: The updated engine offers enhanced detection with cleanup capabilities and better performance.”
