SOLVED: How To Report A Fraudulent Caller That Came Through MS Teams

Today we had a very interesting problem with one of our clients who received a scam call through his Microsoft Teams corporate software from a phone number that appeared to be local. The question the client had was how can he report this number to Microsoft and anyone else that might care.

What To Do After Receiving a Scam Call on MS Teams

If you receive a fraudulent or hacker call through Microsoft Teams, it’s important to report it to help prevent further incidents. Here are the steps you can follow:

1. Report to Microsoft:
   • Surf to the Microsoft scam page https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/concern/scam page and follow the instructions to report the scam.
   • You can also use the Microsoft Teams admin center to report the incident if you are a M365 admin
2. Notify Your IT Department:
   • Inform your IT or security team immediately. They can take steps to investigate and mitigate any potential threats.
3. Block and Remove the User:
   • Block the user who made the fraudulent call
     • Click on the three dots (more options) next to the call or chat.
     • Select Block from the dropdown menu.
   • Delete any suspicious messages or links from your Teams chat.
4. Check for Compromised Accounts:
   • Ensure that your account and any other potentially affected accounts are secure.
   • If you are really worried that you gave up some information, change your passwords and enable multi-factor authentication if not already enabled.
5. Share and Educate:
   • Share information about the incident with your team to raise awareness and prevent future occurrences.

The last step is arguably the most important step and the one people do the least. It is critical to destigmatize the reporting of scams to friends family and coworkers. You are not stupid; these hackers are professionals who have spent years working out ways to take your money or information.
