If you are trying to clean up your hard drive storage you may notice the C:\$Windows.~WS folder and wonder what is in it and if it can be deleted.

What is C:\$Windows.~WS

The C:\$Windows.~WS folder is a hidden directory created by Windows during the upgrade process to a new version of the operating system. It contains essential files needed for the upgrade and allows you to revert to the previous version of Windows if needed. This folder typically includes:

  • Backup Files: Files from your previous Windows installation, which are necessary if you decide to roll back to the earlier version.
  • Installation Files: Files required to complete the upgrade process.
  • Log Files: Logs that record the upgrade process and any issues encountered.

Can C:\$Windows.~WS Be Deleted

While the folder is important during the upgrade process, it can take up a significant amount of disk space. Once you are sure you no longer need to revert to the previous version of Windows, it is safe to delete this folder to free up space.

You can delete it manually or use DISK CLEANUP, RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR, if you put a check beside Previous Windows installations. In the screenshot below, we show selecting ALL items in DISK CLEANUP:

NOTE: Windows hides it by default to prevent accidental deletion or modification, as it contains important files related to the operating system upgrade process. If you don’t see it, the folder either does not exist or, more likely, you do not have HIDDEN and SYSTEM files enabled. If you don’t know how to view HIDDEN folders, see this brief article.
