We do a lot of work with our clients remotely and often end up using their Microsoft 365 licenses temporarily to access their data or systems. As you can see in the screenshot below I had a situation in which my clients Microsoft 365 Apps For Enterprise stayed connected after I was done working with it and that’s a problem. The client doesn’t want me to have one of their licenses and I don’t want to have one of their licenses because we have our own Microsoft 365 Apps For Business Premium seats we source as part of our Microsoft partner plan.

The problem was we couldn’t get rid of the our clients M365 Account on Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook but keep our acocunt in MS Teams for multiple companies.

Here is how we fixed it:

two M365 subscriptions

A – Sign Out

  1. Open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook and click on File in the top menu and select Account
  2. Click the SHOW ADDITIONAL LICENSE INFORMATION link
  3. Click the SWITCH ACCOUNT link,
  4. Switch to the account you want to remove yourself from or just click SIGN OUT if that account is already selected
  5. Click the SIGN OUT button on the SIGN OT OF OFFICE popup
  6. Close all M365 Office products (Words, Teams, Outlook…)

B – Remove Cached Credentials

In our case we did not have any cached creds for the account we did not want, but you might.

  1. Launch Control Panel
  2. Go to User Accounts > Credential Manager
  3. Under Windows Credentials, find and remove the credentials associated with the account you want to remove

C – Remove Cached Licenses

manually remove M365 license from cache

  1. Open a PowerShell or Windows Terminal as an administrator
  2. Enter cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus
  3. Find the license you no longer want and note the LAST 5 CHARACTERS OF THE INSTALLED PRODUCT KEY
  4. Enter cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\OSPP.VBS" /unpkey:XXXXX
Replacing XXXXX with the LAST 5 CHARACTERS OF THE INSTALLED PRODUCT KEY
  5. Have a nice day

Keeping Both Subscriptions in Teams

We did not have to do this part. After the undesired subscription was killed, I found my Teams still had both my URTech and my clients Teams account… but you may not be so fortunate.

  1. Add Multiple Accounts
    • Open Microsoft Teams
    • Click on your profile picture in the top right corner
    • Select Add account and sign in with the second account
  2. Switch Between Accounts
    • You can switch between accounts by clicking on your profile picture and selecting the account you want to use
