SOLVED: Did Java Fork? What is jre_amazon_11.0.22 and jre_Coretto_11.0.2?

Today we had a client asking if their LogicMonitor software uses Java and if they can uninstall Java from their LogicMonitor collectors. The answers are, yes LogicMonitor uses Java but it is a fully embedded version that does not appear in APPS AND FEATURES. Any version that appears in APPS AND FEATURES can safely be uninstalled.

But that got us to https://www.logicmonitor.com/support/collectors/collector-overview/collector-versions which indicates LogicMonitor uses jre_amazon_11.0.22.7.1 and used to use jre_corretto_11.0 . It sounded to us like some Java developers developed a fork in the development path and so we checked it out.

Does Java Have Forks?

Java itself hasn’t forked, but Amazon has created its own distribution of the Open Java Development Kit (OpenJDK) called Amazon Corretto. This is why we are seeing with “jre_amazon_11.0.22.7.1” in the LogicMonitor documentation.

Amazon Corretto is a no-cost, multiplatform, production-ready distribution of OpenJDK. It comes with long-term support, including performance enhancements and security fixes, and is certified as compatible with the Java SE standard. Amazon uses Corretto internally on thousands of production services.

That cleared up the matter for our clients and us… and we thought you might want to know too 🙂
