We recently detailed the top 100 Windows Services because our technicians frequently need to know where they came from, what the default user is, and what those services really do. However, the IaaSVmProvider service did not make that list and it has come up a few times in meetings, so we decided to dig into it a bit more.
The IaaS VM Provider (IaaSVmProvider) service is part of the Azure Backup process for virtual machines (VMs).
Directly related to this, we just completed a Zero To Hero video you may find useful on MABS and what the differences are between Microsoft Azure Backup Service, Microsoft Azure Backup Server, and Microsoft Data Protection Manager.
The IaaSVmProvider service is responsible for coordinating the backup process, particularly for application-consistent backups. When a backup job is initiated, the IaaSVmProvider service starts to ensure that the VM’s data is captured accurately and consistently. Once the backup is complete, the service stops to conserve resources.
Why Does IaaSVmProvider Stop?
If you notice that the IaaSVmProvider service is set to “Automatic” but often appears as “Stopped,” this is normal behavior. As we already stated, it starts when a backup job runs and stops afterward.
