If you are an admin in a modern infrastructure with a bunch of virtual machines you’re probably running them as tight as you can and are regularly running out of disk space. As a result you are probably continuously seeking new files and folders that you can safely delete. We have a nice article explaining what can be safely deleted from C:\Windows and a different article explaining what can safely deleted from your computer C: drive in general.
One folder we are often asked about is C:\Windows\WINSxS\Temp, and the answer is, no, the C:\Windows\WinSxS\Temp folder should not be manually deleted. The WinSxS (Windows Side-by-Side) folder is essential for managing Windows components and updates, and it contains various system files and backups that ensure system stability and allow for features like rollback and component servicing.
While the Temp subfolder inside WinSxS may contain temporary files, deleting them can interfere with system functionality, updates, or repairs. Instead of manually deleting files, you can use tools like Disk Cleanup to safely reduce the size of the WinSxS folder. Disk Cleanup provides an option called “Windows Update Cleanup” that helps remove unnecessary files.
