With so many new smartphones coming out every year it can be hard to keep track of any nuances or new solutions implemented in the new devices. It also always brings the question of upgrading your older phone, the prices, the features, there are so many unanswered questions, and in this article, we will go over everything there is to know about the latest big phone from the Samsung family. So, without further ado, is Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra actually good and worth it?
New Solutions and Synergies
Every smartphone tries to introduce something new, and the most important features of the latest Samsung Galaxy S23 are mostly centered on the S Pen integration and the new and upgraded camera systems. The phone also integrates pretty well with different kinds of wearable technology but works best with the dedicated Samsung Galaxy Watch5 (or the upcoming Watch6).
The only issue with the Watch5 is that the battery life isn’t that great. From personal experience after testing, due to the constant connection to your phone, access to many more functions than some of the other smartwatches it can last up to 5 or 6 days with a lot of battery life settings turned on and screen theme to the minimum with darker colors.
The Cameras
The biggest innovation in this phone is the 200-megapixel camera that allows you to take exceptionally good and detailed photos. Even after zooming in on the picture taken by this camera, you can see a lot of small things that would never be possible with a regular camera. However, it has its drawbacks, because if you want to take semi-professional pictures and save them as RAW files then they can take up to hundreds of megabytes on your phone. We highly recommend using the middle ground of 50-megapixel camera for normal use. It is also hidden behind some settings and not turned on by default so make sure to dig around the settings and switch to the better camera.
The phone also fixes one of the main issues of the previous smartphones from the Samsung Galaxy family which is the shutter lag. The time between you pressing the capture button and the photo actually being taken. You can play around with different settings to minimize the time needed before pressing said button and the picture actually taking place. It feels smoother than ever, and with the capability of taking RAW photos and capture movies at 4K 60FPS or in 8K it might be one of the best smartphones for people liking to take pictures but also knowing a bit about the art of photography. Amateur users will most likely never use most of the camera features, but even then, the phone takes photos of a very high quality, which equals a lot of camera devices.
S Pen Features
S Pen is integrated into the phone and is included with it. You can pull it out at any moment from the bottom of the phone. When you do it you have several options of taking notes, screenshots or even making simple gifs for up to 15 seconds. It is truly a phone for people who like making memes. In addition to the gif creator, you also can isolate images from your gallery. If you open a photo and hold your finger over an object or a person, it will crop them out allowing for some funny photos with transparent background that you can turn into emojis or stickers if you please.
Other than that, the S Pen is great for taking notes on the screen if you need to write something down and do it fast. It can also be an original pick-up line, and if you ask someone for their number, they can give it to you by just writing in on the top of your screen, seems kind of cool. The last function we want to mention that is connected to S Pen is the ability to use it as a remote. You can assign various functions to gestures or even on press of a button. You can place your phone in a remote place, go away with friends and then take a picture by just pressing the S Pen button.
Is Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Worth It?
The smartphone itself isn’t the cheapest and is still around 1000-1500 dollars (depending on the memory) in many shops. However, it is still significantly less than the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5. It is your classic phone with quite a big screen, and it runs smoothly with all the applications we evaluated on it. The price can be off-putting but if you are looking for an upgrade after a couple of years of not changing a phone then it could be a great choice. However, we wouldn’t recommend switching to it from something like Galaxy S22 or even S21 models.
Overall the phone is actually great for today’s standards if you are interested in taking photos or playing games on your phone, and is worth it’s price, but you need to make sure that the features it offers are suitable for you, because if you do not care about the camera or many capabilities of the S Pen and generally a good inside with good GPU, and you use your phone mainly for Instagram and making calls then this might not be the right fit for you.
