SOLVED: Cannot Load Counter Name Data Because An Invalid Index ” Was Read From The Registry

This error popped up when I was attempting to install Update Rollup 3 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM.  I had manually downloaded KB3016464 and tried to manually install it, rather than watching it error out repeatedly in Windows Update.

The answer was to:

  1. Click the START button
  2. Type CMD
  3. Right click CMD PROMPT and select RUN AS ADMIN
  4. Type LODCTR /r
  5. Wait a few seconds for it to throw ERROR: UNABLE TO REBUILD PERFORMANCE COUNTER SETTING FROM SYSTEM BACKUP STORE. ERROR CODE IS 2
  6. Type LODCTR /r (yes, do it again 🙂 )
  7. This time it will run successfully
  8. Run Windows Update and try the install patch that was causing you problems again or manually try to run the update again
  9. Have a nice day.

In case you are wondering LODCTR updates the performance counters which are stored in the registry and can be corrupted.  As you might have guessed, LODCTR /R causes a Rebuild of those counters.

For more details type LODCTR /? into a CMD prompt and press ENTER.

  • I can not thank you enough! I only tried this because of all the positive comments. This is an area of my computer that I have no business because I don’t know what I’m doing. The directions were very clear and easy to follow. I liked the part where you said yes, type it again. It was so....much easier than the uninstall, restart, install that my software tech people had me doing that took so long and did not work.
    If anyone else is getting this error message and read my comment, don’t be scared. Follow his directions and you will be happy.

    I get this problem on my project on Visual Studio when i get Blue Dead screen. i get Blue Dead screen because other program

    my project doesn't start and When i edit my project main Form i get "(Cannot load Counter Name data because an invalid index '' was read from the registry.)"

    After doing above steps everything is going well and my project come back to living.
