I figured out How to Add A Gantt Chart to Sharepoint 2010 Foundation last year, but I forgot and it took me over an hour to figure it out again, so this time I am writing the process down. There are two ready ways to create a Gantt chart via the GUI:
The nut of the problem is that Microsoft calls this webpart a PROJECT TASK.
“…Project tasks lists provide a Gantt Chart view and can be openned by Microsoft Project or other compatible programs…”

There is no Gantt option when creating a view from an External list... Is this possible?
I am sorry to day I am not sure. I am now playing with SharePoint Foundation 2013 and am no longer working with Gantt's :(
Good,
This is awesome information. Was exaclty what I was looking for. Thanks!
Thanks so much for this. No one likes to use project here so I've been looking for a solution to providing a Gantt chart for the stakeholders other than excel. Pitty you can't shrink sub-tasks to get a high level view. Or can you?
Yep you can I think.
Click on the ribbon, under the "list" entry. There should be a section called gantt which contains zoom in and zoom out buttons :)
Not that I know of.
I am glad this helped.
Sweet, was looking exactly for this.
